John Guidetti: “I feel terrible. I apologised to my teammates, I hope they can forgive me.”

The on loan Manchester City forward went from hero to villain in a matter of seconds this Saturday evening as he fell foul of one of the worst rules in football.

Guidetti looked to have continued his brilliant goal scoring form in the Eredivisie when he lashed home  a penalty to put Feyenoord 1-0 up at home to RKC Waalwijk with just 13 minutes remaining.

Already on a booking, but buoyed by the atmosphere and his 18th goal in 16 games, saw Guidetti lose himself and rip off his shirt to the adoring De Kuip supporters.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo Koeman expressed his displeasure on the touchline and referee Danny Makkelie had no choice but to book the Manchester City striker for a second time and send him off – behaviour hardly likely to endear himself to Roberto Mancini either.

Of course, Guidetti should have known better but this website has long campaigned for a change in rules when it comes to players being cautioned for taking their shirts off after scoring a goal.

Professional footballers routinely describe the moment after scoring as “better than sex” and it simply makes no sense to penalise players for celebrating.

Perhaps the only reason for this rule can be to ensure the sponsors receive maximum exposure since it only enhances the game for the players and supporters.

The lack of goal-line technology is a real bug bear of ours, but this has to be the worst rule in football.

Footage of John Guidetti scoring a penalty, taking his shirt off, and receiving a second yellow card, is here.
