England won all three group matches at last summer’s European Championships, scoring 14 goals and conceding zero, very much hoping for a repeat of that perfect record.
The Lionesses, of course, went on to win that tournament; weather or not they can emulate that Down Under remains to be seen.
Nevertheless, Sarina Wiegman’s side are set to cruise to first place in Group D, possibly with maximum points, ahead of substantially tougher tests to come in the knockout rounds.
Who’ll join them there remains up for grabs, with both Denmark and China PR very much confident of taking second spot.
De rød-hvide exited last year’s Euros in the group phase although, admittedly, they were in a very tough section alongside Germany and Spain.
Nevertheless, Lars Søndergaard’s team are under big pressure to put that right this time, thereby leading Denmark into the knockout phase for the first time since 1995.
In fact, the Steel Roses have never exited a World Cup in the group phase, but that could change this year.
Denmark and China meet in their opener at Perth Rectangular Stadium on 22 July, and whoever wins that match, if there is a victor, will be in the catbird seat to advance.
A quick word on Haiti, who are making their World Cup debut, following inter-confederation play-off victories over Senegal and Chile earlier this year.
This’ll be the first time since the men’s team qualified for the 1974 edition that the Haitian flag will be flying at a World Cup but, unfortunately for le Rouge et Bleu, it would be a minor-miracle if they didn’t lost all three fixtures.
Predicted: 1st: England. 2nd: Denmark. 3rd: China PR. 4th: Haiti.
