PGA Championship 2025: Preview, prediction and how to watch as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy bid for glory in Charlotte

PGA Championship 2025 overview

If Rory McIlroy needed any more momentum after winning the Masters last month, the setting of Quail Hollow offers another cause for confidence for the Northern Irishman as he attempts to win the 2025 PGA Championship.

McIlroy has won four titles at the Charlotte club, making it little wonder that he described himself as being “in a good place” after the Truist Championship in North Carolina on Sunday.

“I didn’t feel I played all that well and I still finished seventh,” said McIlroy. “Even with what I feel is my bad golf, I’m still there or thereabouts.

“With a couple of little tweaks – especially going to a place that I love, like Quail Hollow – I feel like I’m in a really good spot.”

The weather conditions on the course should also suit McIlroy’s ability on the drive, with fans prevented from attending Quail Hollow on Monday because of inclement weather.

The outlook predicts an improvement by the start of play on Thursday, when world number one Scottie Scheffler is likely to be the only player with odds as short as McIlroy.

Justin Thomas – the winner when the championship last visited Quail Hollow, in 2017 – is also considered among the contenders, as are Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele.

“I’ve been trying to just pick up the pace as much as possible,” said Schauffele, who beat DeChambeau by a shot last year to win his first major and proceeded to then triumph at The Open Championship.

“There’s probably been a little bit of anxiousness in terms of playing at a high enough level to win, feeling like a lot of guys are sort of passing me by.”

Schauffele has had a quiet year so far but has made the cut at each of the seven events he has competed in. “I think my confidence is slowing building,” he added.

“I’m trying to allow that to happen versus sort of looking back at what I could have done better. I am excited for the next stretch.

“I have played well at Quail Hollow. It fits my eye and, for whatever reason, I’ve been up at the top of the leaderboard for last two years.

“I don’t see why this year should be an issue. I’m definitely excited to get back and try and defend the trophy.”

PGA Championship 2025 prediction

Having ended his 11-year wait for a major, and completed the career Grand Slam, at last month’s Masters, McIlroy would have been among the favourites no matter where the PGA Championship was held.

The theory is now the monkey is off his back, the Ulsterman will usher in an era of dominance and win multiple times over the next decade.

That may or may not come to fruition but there is one thing we can say with an element of certainty: McIlroy loves Quail Hollow.

The 36-year-old has won four times at the North Carolina venue and holds the course record. It is a place he loves coming back to.

Bryson DeChambeau playing golf

“It’s a place that I’m very comfortable at. With Quail Hollow, the city of Charlotte in general and the people,”  he said. Jordan Spieth even described it as the ‘Rory McIlroy County Club’ in a tongue-in-cheek remark last week.

McIlroy has done well here due to his length off the tee and with inclement weather predicted that could become an even bigger advantage.

It also brings other players into play.

Scottie Scheffler is the obvious horse to back if McIlroy falls early. And if we’re looking at bombers with driver in hand, you can never discount Bryson DeChambeau.

Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay played well at the Truist Championship last week, as did Shane Lowry.

If you’re looking for value, Keith Mitchell may be a good each way bet. The American is also in good form with two top-10 finishes in his last four events and sits 13th on the PGA Tour for driving distance.
