Why Darwin Nunez was benched for Liverpool’s clash with Fulham

An explanation for Darwin Nunez being benched vs Fulham has been provided.

Liverpool are set to kick off their 2022/23 Premier League campaign on Saturday afternoon vs Fulham.

The Reds head into the game looking for a strong start to the campaign as they once again attempt to take the league crown away from Manchester City.

Ahead of the match, Liverpool released their matchday squad an hour before kick-off.

The starting eleven was strong, but some fans and many Fantasy Premier League players were likely not too happy to see new signing Darwin Nunez only make the bench.

Now though, Jurgen Klopp has explained why the Uruguayan did not start vs Fulham:

“Darwin needs time to settle and we need to mix it up a bit. Bobby is a baller. The other two boys have speed. It’s about mixing it up – we thought it would be better to start with Bobby today.”

On Liverpool’s fairly inexperienced bench for Saturday’s game, Klopp added: “We have to be ready. We feel ready, the pre-season was really good. But we have had too many injuries. We need the boys coming back sooner rather than later.”
