Leeds United vs Newcastle United: Match preview
Leeds United claimed a massive win away at West Ham last Sunday to make it back-to-back league wins in 2022 after a crucial win over Burnley.
Despite being knocked out of the FA Cup in between against the same opposition, the win over West Ham has provided fresh optimism around Elland Road that they should be able to distance themselves from the relegation worries that have dogged them throughout the season so far.
Jack Harrison was the star turn, giving the Whites the lead three times with three well-taken goals to well and truly end his own personal struggles – he scored his first goal of the season two weeks previous – and his battle with Kieran Trippier could be one of the fascinating contests of the afternoon.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side are still depleted through injuries – two more players went down last week – but his ability to integrate youth players straight into the first team will not make it any easier for the Magpies.
Newcastle winless in five matches
Newcastle United are now without a win in five matches, and despite splashing the cash in January with the signings of Trippier and Chris Wood, they know they need to start picking up points soon.
They were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Watford last Saturday which dealt their immediate hopes of climbing out of the bottom three a blow, and now face another crucial game against a side who they would previously have considered rivals.
The point means that the Tyneside club remain 19th in the league and with just one win under Eddie Howe.
They continue to be linked with new signings – Jesse Lingard has been heavily linked this week – and more will be needed if they are to maintain serious hopes of survival.
Leeds United team news vs Newcastle United
Leeds remain heavily impacted by injuries, having lost Junior Firpo and Adam Forshaw to hamstring injuries at the weekend, though both are expected to be back after the international break.
On the positive side of things, Diego Llorente is back from suspension and will be expected to slot into the back line meaning Luke Ayling can return to full back.
Stuart Dallas could fill in on the left for Firpo or alternatively in the middle for Forshaw, such was the impression Leo Hjelde made at left-back against West Ham.
Joe Gelhardt and Tyler Roberts are back in contention for the Peacocks but Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Jamie Shackleton all remain sidelined.
Newcastle United team news vs Leeds United
Callum Wilson remains sidelined until March and new signing Chris Wood will need to step up in his absence.
Isaac Hayden, Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark are all out.
Javier Manquillo returns from suspension.
