Burnley vs Newcastle United betting tips: Premier League preview, predictions & odds

The Magpies have the upper hand in the head to head with five wins to Burnley's two from their eleven encounters in the Premier League. They have won each of the last three league matches between the sides including a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture back in December. However, they have little to play for here while Burnley are fighting for their survival at Turf Moor. Therefore, 101 Great Goals' prediction for this match is Burnley 1 - 1 Newcastle United and is available at odds of 6.5/1.

Alternatively, you can bet on any Burnley win at 2.35/1 against Newcastle United at home on Sunday.

Or, back any away win for Newcastle United at 2.95/1 here at Turf Moor.

You can find odds of 3.25/1 for any draw between Burnley and Newcastle United on Sunday.

Match preview

Burnley welcomes Newcastle United to Turf Moor on Sunday for this final Premier League match of the 2021/22 campaign. In mid-January fans of both clubs would have had this match circled as a potential relegation decider. At the time the two clubs occupied 19th and 20th in the Premier League table and had just one win each.

A winter spending spree facilitated a quick climb out of the relegation zone for Newcastle who have since rocketed up the table and have a chance of finishing in the top half of the table should results elsewhere go their way on Sunday.

Burnley’s climb out of trouble has been a slower one and has come at the expense of club legend Sean Dyche, who was relieved of his duties in mid-April. Despite the decision being heavily criticised, Mike Jackson has performed heroics as the caretaker manager to pick up almost twice as many points per game as Dyche in the last seven games to reel in Leeds who were nine points above them.

The two clubs are now level on points on the final day of the season. However, Burnley’s vastly superior goal difference means they merely need to match Leeds's result at the weekend to survive the drop.

Leeds have to travel to in form Brentford who have won as many games as league-leaders Manchester City over the last ten matches with only Liverpool winning more. However, you cannot expect anybody to do you any favours in the Premier League which means Burnley needs to win here to be the controllers of their own destiny.

Callum Wilson Goalscorer. - Wilson (pictured above) was the scorer of the only goal when these sides last met back in December. The England international is Newcastle’s top scorer this season with six goals but hasn’t found the back of the net since that Burnley game, largely due to injury. The 30-year-old forward is the 6/1 favourite to score the game’s opener once again on Sunday. Or 2.7/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Burnley.

Burnley team news

Ashley Westwood fractured and dislocated his ankle at West Ham at the end of April and won’t make a return to action until later this year. Matej Vydra is another who likely won’t play again in 2022 after an ACL injury. Johann Berg Gudmundsson is also out with a long term lower leg injury since mid-January and Erik Pieters is out with a knee injury.

Matthew Lowton are set to appeal the red card against Villa on Thursday night. Phil Bardsley would come in at right back here should the appeal fail. Ben Mee has been out with a lower leg injury for twelve games now. It is unlikely he will be risked here and Nathan Collins is expected to continue in his place next to James Tarkowski in defence. Jay Rodriguez (pictured above) faces a late fitness test on his thigh injury and is rated 50-50 for Sunday.

Newcastle United team news

Isaac Hayden and Jamal Lewis all remain ruled out for the Magpies. Hayden has returned to training after a long time out with a knee injury. However, the target is pre-season rather than risking him here. Lewis also had an operation to fix his long standing groin problem and remains on the long term injury list. Jonjo Shelvey is also expected back for pre-season after another calf problem similar to the one he had at the start of the season. Joseph Willock is likewise ruled out until the summer as he rests a tendon in his knee.
