Burnley vs Watford: Match preview

Two of the Premier League's bottom four go head-to-head in a crucial, relegation six-pointer at Turf Moor.

This match comes in the middle of a pivotal seven-day period for Watford.

On Saturday, they battled to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at St James' Park, thanks to João Pedro's late header.

This ended a run of six consecutive league defeats for Claudio Ranieri's side.

Coming up on Friday, the Hornets host Norwich, meaning they'll face all three relegation rivals in less than a week.

Thus, by 10 o'clock Friday night, Watford will either have pulled clear of the relegation places or remain firmly be in trouble.

Will the Hertfordshire club claim their first victory since hammering Manchester United 4-1 on 20 November?

Burnley meanwhile sank to the foot of the Premier League table following Norwich's surprise victory over Everton on Saturday.

The Clarets though have now had five matches postponed following Saturday's home game against Leicester that didn't take place at Burnley’s request.

So, Sean Dyche's team have only played two league games since 12 December but have lost both 3-1, at Manchester United and Leeds United.

Nevertheless, with 21 games still to play, Burnley will not be panicking just yet, although anxiety levels may go up a notch if they're beaten here.

Will either claim three massive points at Turf Moor?

Burnley team news vs Watford

Given that Burnley didn't have the required 13 first-team players available to host Leicester on Saturday, their squad could be decimated by injuries and Covid-19 cases.

The headline team news is that they're short of attacking options with Maxwell Cornet at AFCON and Chris Wood having left for Newcastle.

Ashley Barnes is also injured, meaning Jay Rodríguez, who scored against Huddersfield in the FA Cup, is likely to be the main goal threat.

A boost though could come at left-back where Charlie Taylor is expected to return, meaning Phil Bardsley will drop out.

Midfielder Dale Stepehens made his first start since 31 October 2020 in that aforementioned cup tie but is unlikely to be in the XI again here.

Watford team news vs Burnley

Ben Foster made his first appearance since Watford's last win on Saturday, after Daniel Bachmann had deputised for seven matches, losing all seven.

Ahead of him the Hornets' have been severely weakened by AFCON with Adam Masina, William Troost-Ekong and Imrân Louza all currently in Cameroon.

However, for one reason or another, Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis is not apart of Nigeria's squad so will be Watford's main goal-threat again.

Hassane Kamara, Samir and Edo Kayembe all made their debut at St James' Park and could all keep their places here.

With these three editions, as well as a big squad anyway, Claudio Ranieri may rotate with another huge game to come on Friday night.
