Thursday provided the biggest day of drama and upset of the World Cup yet, with Germany and Belgium both crashing out at the group stages, and Spain progressing despite a shock defeat to Japan.
A controversial goal for Japan helped them snatch a 2-1 win over Spain having come from behind in the second half - just as they did against Germany - to send Hansi Flick’s side packing, who themselves were losing to Costa Rica only to recover and win 4-2.
Had the South American nation finished on top, there could have been dramatic eliminations for Spain and Germany to really open up that side of the draw, but Luis Enrique’s side managed to sneak through despite failing to live up to the lofty standards set by their opening game demolition of Costa Rica.
Croatia confirmed their place in the last 16 with a goalless draw with Belgium, who again disappointed and head home with just one win in their three games after Romelu Lukaku suffered a nightmare in front of goal, missing several clear-cut opportunities to be the hero for his side.
With all but two of the qualifiers now determined - Portugal and Brazil are already through - Friday sees the final day of the group stages, with Serbia, Switzerland, Ghana, Uruguay, Cameroon and South Korea all with a chance of finishing second in their respective groups.
