As per a report from reliable Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano this evening, Wolves are currently engaged in negotiations with Valencia over a move for Joao Cancelo.
Cancelo, a 24-year-old right-back who can also be deployed on the left, made the move to the San Siro on loan last summer, amid links with the likes of Juventus and Manchester United.
After an early injury following his arrival in Italy saw the Portuguese international sidelined until October, Cancelo slowly worked his way into the reckoning of Nerazzurri manager Luciano Spalletti, eventually going on to make 26 Serie A appearances (20 starts).
Cancelo also managed to rack up 1 goal and 3 assists during his time spent on the pitch, looking majorly impressive in attacking areas during his Serie A stint.
However, questions have remained over his abilities on the other side of the ball, which, coupled with Financial Fair Play constraints, likely proved a contributing factor to Inter’s hesitance to pay the 35 million Euro redemption clause agreed with Valencia to make Cancelo’s move permanent.
Inter’s failure to cough up the required sum by the May 31st deadline has since led to growing rumours in both the Spanish and Italian medias that a number of other clubs have entered the fray for Cancelo, with a report from Calciomercato last month having revealed that Valencia had already received at least one offer worth more than the 35 million Euro fee previously agreed between Los Che and Inter.
All of Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus have since been touted as potential destinations for Cancelo over the last couple of weeks, but, as per the aforementioned update from Fabrizio Romano this evening, a shock contender could be set to seal a big-money deal for the stopper in the near future.
Romano has revealed that Wolverhampton Wanderers, who secured a return to the Premier League courtesy of a dominant Championship title win this past season, are currently in talks with Cancelo’s representative. super-agent Jorge Mendes, over taking the creative full-back to Molineux this summer.
Wolves are said to have lodged a 40 million Euro offer to Valencia, with manager Nuno Espírito Santo keen to add yet another of his fellow countrymen to the ever-growing list of Portuguese stars playing their trade at the club.
