Why Thiago Silva was not named Chelsea captain

Mauricio Pochettino has explained why he did not name Thiago Silva as the new Chelsea captain.

Cesar Azpilicueta was Chelsea captain but left the club over the summer.

On paper, the experienced Thiago Silva seemed like an obvious candidate to replace the Spaniard but the Brazilian was overlooked for the armband despite being the most experienced and decorated player in the Chelsea squad.

Reece James replaced Cesar Azpilicueta as Chelsea captain, with Ben Chilwell acting as his deputy.

Now, speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Ham, which Reece James will miss due to a hamstring injury, Pochettino explained why Silva was not given the role.

Pochettino said: “For many different reasons, I am looking not only in the present but for the future.

“It was a good situation because Reece is ready to be captain. When the player is clever like Thiago, who is 38 and nearly 39. Do you think he is thinking about needing the armband? He is a captain as well like Reece and Chilwell.
