Why Raphael Varane was the reason Man United failed to sign a defender

Raphael Varane

Huge money bid from Man United

Manchester United missed out on a defender as the transfer window slammed shut, and now the MEN are claiming it’s all because they wanted to break the world record price for a centre back, and land Raphael Varane.

Manager Jose Mourinho is a huge fan of the player – with the feeling mutual, with Mourinho having brought him through to the first team during his time in Spain, and has often spoken about the player in glowing terms since leaving the Spanish capital.

After a brilliant World Cup, Varane has seen his stock rise even higher, and United were reportedly willing to make a £100 million bid for him – an astounding amount of money, and one that would have sent a huge statement of intent around Europe.

As it was, they were left linked with every defender out there, and even Phil Jagielka got a mention as the clock started to tick down, and the club were mocked.

Mourinho left fuming

Given how well Varane has done in the last 18 months, for club and country, it would be a shock to see Real Madrid sell him, and it could well speak to the level of skill Ed Woodward has when it comes to buying players and getting deals over the line that this has happened to United.

Given the MEN note he spoke to Florentino Perez before Real Madrid and United played in pre-season and was told the defender was not for sale, there would have been plenty of time to line up an alternative – yet despite being linked with many names, that was never the case.

Now, Jose Mourinho faces at least half a season with defenders who many think are not good enough – and has already warned this will be a ‘difficult’ campaign given the squad he has to work with.
