Manchester United faced off with Melbourne Victory on Friday morning.
It was the Red Devils’ second pre-season friendly of the summer, having smashed Liverpool 4-0 in their opening outing earlier in the week.
For the game vs Melbourne, Erik ten Hag made a few changes to his side, which included leaving out two top stars.
Neither of David de Gea nor Raphael Varane were included in the matchday squad on Friday, whilst Marcus Rashford was dropped to the bench:
An explanation for David de Gea missing out vs the Australian outfit has since been provided, however.
As per Rob Dawson of ESPN, the Spaniard picked up an injury vs Liverpool:
As for Varane, the Manchester Evening News also suggest that he too is injured: “The only change not enforced on Ten Hag is Rashford…”
“Fans are bound to roll their eyes at the brittle Varane’s absence. It is just as well United are signing a centre-back as they cannot trust Varane in a gruelling season where there is a World Cup in the middle of it.”
