Why Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood will not be called up to the England squad

Why Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood will not be called up to the England squad

Mason Greenwood’s fast start

Still only 19-years-old, Mason Greenwood is one of Manchester United’s, and the Premier League’s, brightest talents.

The English forward, who is also comfortable in a wide role, broke through the ranks last season with the Red Devils, finding the net 12 times in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

At the beginning of this season, he has continued to prove he knows where the goal is, netting three times in just 5 Premier League appearances, and finding himself keeping new signing Jadon Sancho out of the side.

Like fellow youngster Bukayo Saka, Greenwood was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad last campaign, but was dropped alongside Phil Foden after breaking quarantine rules in an Icelandic hotel in September 2020.

While Foden appears to have been granted a reprieve and has made his way back into the national side, the same cannot be said for Greenwood. Following an impressive start to the season, an England call up seemed inevitable.

Solskjaer set to block England call up

However, the Daily Mail report that while Southgate is keen to initiate a return for Greenwood, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has asked for him to be omitted from the squad. As per the report:

“There are concerns at Old Trafford that another England call-up at this stage would put the teenager under increased pressure and scrutiny, at a time when he is still establishing himself at United, as well as adding to his workload.”

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin also out of the upcoming international break, could we see another chance for Danny Ings or Ollie Watkins?
