Why Gareth Southgate is planning to recall Eric Dier to England squad

Eric Dier is expected to be named in the latest England squad just ahead of the World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier is set to be recalled into the England squad, according to the Daily Mail.

The Three Lions have two final Nations League matches ahead of this winter’s World Cup.

Gareth Southgate is now considering recalling the 28-year-old for the games against Italy and Germany.

Dier set for England recall

The England manager has been impressed by Dier’s recent performances for Spurs.

The defender has thrived under Antonio Conte and in his three-back system.

Southgate uses a similar set-up for England and this is why he is now on the verge of a recall.

Dier has been the middle centre-back for Conte and he would therefore be competing with Harry Maguire in the England squad.

Maguire has recently been dropped by his club’s manager, Erik ten Hag, raising question marks over his place in the line-up.

Other central defenders who could be named in the squad include John Stones, Marc Guéhi, Ben White, Fikayo Tomori and Conor Coady.
