‘When I realized that it wasn’t about performance or quality’: Bernd Leno aims dig at Aaron Ramsdale

Bernd Leno has taken a shot at Aaron Ramsdale after leaving Arsenal for Fulham over the summer.

Leno began the 2021/22 campaign as Arsenal’s no.1 shot-stopper, with then new signing Aaron Ramsdale expected to play back up to the German.

However, Leno was swiftly dropped by Mikel Arteta after the opening three games of the season. The Gunners lost three on the bounce, shipping nine goals in the process.

From then on, Ramsdale has cemented himself as Arsenal’s no.1 goalkeeper, with Leno only making a further five appearances in the remainder of 2021/22.

So, when the 2022 summer transfer window opened, it was not too surprising to see Leno leave the club in search of first-team football.

The former Bayer Leverkusen keeper has now joined Fulham. He has become a regular starter for Marco Silva’s side, shipping seven goals and failing to keep a clean sheet in four games.

Now, in a recent interview, Leno has aimed a dig at Aaron Ramsdale:

“When I realized that it wasn’t about performance or quality, I knew that I had to go. In preparation, I saw that it is not about performance, but only about politics. It was clear to me: I had to get out of here.”
