The bizarre opening sequence made use of by the BBC for this evening’s edition of Match of the Day has piqued widespread attentions across social media.
The subject of Saturday’s airing of Match of the Day, of course, has taken its place front and centre in the headlines across the last 48 hours.
This comes amid remarkable first-time circumstances, kicked into gear on Friday morning.
After the BBC unveiled a statement, revealing that long-time host Gary Lineker had been relieved of his duties owing to his use of social media to express political viewpoints, the programme’s co-hosts showcased their backing for Lineker in making themselves unavailable for the weekend.
Not only that, but the likes of Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and Alex Scott were subsequently backed in their boycott by the show’s commentary team, too.
Everybody knows what Match of the Day means to me, but I’ve told the BBC I won’t be doing it tomorrow. Solidarity.

The BBC, as a result, announced plans late last night for Match of the Day to be broadcast ‘without studio presentation or punditry’.
And what a surreal experience it proved to be…
