An absolutely chaotic scene unfolded in France this evening, on the back of the showdown between Saint-Etienne and Auxerre.

After a 1-1 stalemate between the two sides in the first-leg of their promotion/relegation playoff in Ligue 1, the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard acted as the venue on Sunday, as Saint-Etienne and Auxerre went toe-to-toe for a place in the top-flight of French football for the 2022/23 campaign.

It was the latter who opened the scoring in the clash, when Hamza Sakhi slotted home early in the 2nd-half.

Hosts Saint-Etienne soon levelled things up courtesy of Mahdi Camara, though, sending proceedings in east central France to extra-time, and, in turn, a penalty shootout.

And, when all was said and done, it was Auxerre who went on hold their nerve, emerging on the right side of a 5-4 shootout scoreline, to book their place back in Ligue 1 for next season.

Turning attentions towards the Saint-Etienne side of things, though, it is safe to say that the scenes inside the Geoffroy-Guichard were not long in taking a turn for the worse...

Within mere seconds of Auxerre's winning spot-kick finding the net, a pitch invasion was kicked into gear, as the home crowd made their feelings with Les Verts' underperforming stars crystal clear.

In frankly disgusting scenes, players from both sides were attacked, forced to flee the field of play as flares and projectiles rained down in their direction.

Check out footage of the incident, which is also understood to have seen members of the security presence in attendance physically assaulted, below:
