Transfer deadline day: Who are the winners and losers?

It was a fairly quiet transfer deadline day in the Premier League with Crystal Palace’s £48m signing of Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen the highlight.

There was more talk of the deals that didn’t happen, as Jean-Philippe Mateta did not join AC Milan over issues with his fitness.

Several other clubs made moves without the flurry of big-money, high-profile arrivals we may have expected.

Here’s some of the movers on the day.

Forest make Netz gain

Nottingham Forest signed left-back Luca Netz from Borussia Monchengladbach on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The 22-year-old was Forest’s third signing of the window after they brought in forward Lorenzo Lucca and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

Netz told the club’s website: “Nottingham Forest is a great club with a unique history. The chance to play for this club in the Premier League immediately excited me.”

One in, one out for Brighton

Brighton midfielder Brajan Gruda moved to RB Leipzig on loan for the rest of the season.

The Germany under-21 international signed a four-year deal after moving to Brighton from Mainz for £25million in August 2024, going on to score four times and contribute eight assists in 45 appearances.

Brighton also confirmed they have recalled Matt O’Riley from his loan spell with Ligue 1 side Marseille after he made 25 appearances across all competitions for the club.

Boss Fabian Hurzeler said: “We’re pleased to welcome Matt back to the club. We know all about his qualities and I have no doubt he will settle back into the group very quickly. He’s had a good spell with Marseille.”

Disasi set to make Hammers move

Chelsea defender Axel Disasi will undergo a medical at West Ham and is expected to complete a move to the London Stadium on loan for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old had been training separately from the Blues’ first team prior to January and though he has been reintegrated with the squad under new head coach Liam Rosenior, he is not part of the club’s plans.

He last played for Chelsea in January last year before spending the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa where he made seven Premier League appearances, as well as three in the Champions League.

Ex-England man Phillips gets Blades move

Sheffield United have signed Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan for the rest of the season.

Philips, 30, has seen his career nose-dive since joining City from Leeds for £45million in 2022, having failed to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s first-team plans.

Sunderland sign Angulo

Sunderland, who thrashed Burnley on Monday night, also signed Ecuador winger Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht for a reported fee of £17.5m.

The 22-year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract at the Stadium of Light, with a club option of an additional year.

The Blacks Cats have allowed Simon Adingra to join Monaco on loan until the end of the season, with the deal including an option to make the move permanent.

Sunderland, who also sold Patrick Roberts to Birmingham on deadline day, confirmed that Adil Aouchiche has joined Bundesliga 2 side Schalke on a permanent deal.

Defender Leo Hjelde has also left for Sky Bet Championship club Sheffield United on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Blues call Sarr back

Mamadou Sarr has been recalled from his loan spell at Strasbourg and will work under Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior again.

Sarr was Rosenior’s captain at Strasbourg after he returned to the French club in the summer on loan following a permanent move to Stamford Bridge.

Senegal centre-back Sarr had made 18 appearances for Strasbourg despite some injury issues, but will spend the rest of the campaign at Chelsea.
