Manchester United had a very active summer transfer window that saw them spend over £200m on players including Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.
One man who did not make it to Old Trafford, though, with PSV winger Cody Gakpo.
The Dutchman was linked with United for several weeks, but no move came to pass.
Gakpo has spent his entire career on the books of hometown club, PSV.
The Eindhoven-native has featured on 153 occasions for PSV’s senior side. In these games, he has scored 55 and assisted 44.
Gakpo had a particularly fruitful 2021/22 season, which saw him notch 21 goals and provide 15 assists in 47 outings across all competitions – a fantastic return for a winger.
Now, the 23-year-old has revealed how close he came to signing for Manchester United:
“I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United,” he said. “In the end the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
