Chelsea show interest in Dutch forward

Chelsea are interested in signing FC Barcelona’s Memphis Depay, it has been reported.

According to Spanish outlet Diario Sport, Chelsea are thinking about signing Depay before the end of the transfer window.

Depay’s situation is currently being monitored by countless clubs across Europe including Tottenham, Juventus, and Everton.

Depay joined the Spanish powerhouse on a free transfer last summer after his contract with Lyon expired.

He went on to open 2021/22 as Barca’s main striker, scoring four and assisting two in his first eight La Liga outings of the campaign.

However, due to a combination of injury, a change in manager and a busy January for Barcelona, Depay is now very much a fringe option.

The 28-year-old scored twice in his last five league games of 2021/22, but he struggled to complete 90 minutes in any of those matches.

Instead, La Blaugrana have been relying on Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for most of their goals.

Barca have also since completed the signing of Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich, pushing Depay even further down the attacking pecking order.

And now, Depay could be on his way to Chelsea to replace the outgoing Timo Werner.

Chelsea currently do not have a natural no.9 on their books after loaning Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan earlier this summer.

This has led to Kai Havertz being forced to take up the mantle as Chelsea’s centre-forward option so far this season.

However, the German is not exactly a prolific goalscorer at the best of times and his record between the months of August and December is not great at all.

So, unless Sterling starts to produce goals on a weekly basis, Chelsea probably need a new striker this month.
