That man is Brighton’s Adam Webster. The Blues have already signed one centre-back this summer in the form of Kalidou Koulibaly.
The former Napoli man settled in quickly to the Premier League, helping the Blues keep a clean sheet vs Everton and, most recently, scoring vs Tottenham last week. However, he then got himself sent off as Chelsea were smashed 3-0 by Leeds on Sunday.
And after Chelsea lost both Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger for free over the summer, it makes sense for Chelsea, who play three at the back, to want another central defender through the door.
Jules Kounde did look set to be that man, but the Frenchman has now signed for FC Barcelona.
This led to Fofana becoming their no.1 priority, with the defender himself seemingly keen on a move.
A move for the Frenchman is proving somewhat difficult to complete, though, leading Chelsea to look at alternative options.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea aim to add another central defender before next Thursday’s transfer deadline with Fofana their priority. But they have made enquiries for other options in case a compromise fee cannot be agreed with Leicester after having two bids for Fofana rejected.
One of those names, along with Harry Maguire, is Adam Webster of Brighton, who caught the eye of the west Londoners in a 1-1 draw last season.
No potential transfer fee is mentioned for Webster.
