The player in question is RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, who is valued at €80m on transfermarket.com.
The 25-year-old is naturally a central attacking midfielder. However, he played in a number of positions this past term, including up front in a two.
His most productive role, though, has come as an attacking midfielder in a front three.
This position saw Nkunku score a staggering 30 goals and provide 20 assists in 46 games across all competitions last term. And he has continued to impress in 2022/23, netting 17 and assisting four in 23 games so far.
Such impressive production was expected to see Nkunku, who is under contract until 2024, command a mammoth transfer fee when RB Leipzig do eventually opt to sell him.
The French international was linked with many Premier League clubs over the course of last season, with Chelsea the side most heavily credited with an interest.
And now, Chelsea have been handed a boost as RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl has suggested that a transfer is in the works for Christopher Nkunku as he confirmed interest in the France international.
Chelsea are said to be on the verge of signing the 25-year-old and Eberl said at a press conference on Friday that they are in danger of losing him:
“There is of course a great deal of interest in Nkunku and there is a lot of talk, that’s the way it is. Accordingly, there is a threat looming,” he said.
