Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Serie A star Stefan de Vrij, according to reports.
Football Insider report that Villa boss Steven Gerrard wants to sign an A-list centre-back this summer, and de Vrij is on the club’s radar as they plot more top-class signings to follow the January capture of Philippe Coutinho.
The Inter stopper is currently only under contract at the San Siro until 2023, meaning he will have just one year left on his deal come the summer.
And whilst FI report that he was valued at around the £40m mark in January, it is added that this valuation will be lower by the opening of the next transfer window due to his contract situation.
Should Aston Villa be able to coax the Dutchman away from the San Siro, it would be a major statement of intent from the Midlands-based outfit.
De Vrij joined Inter Milan on a free transfer from Lazio in 2018, and has since become a mainstay in their backline, featuring in over 150 matches and playing a key role in the club's title-winning 2020/21 campaign.
Would de Vrij join Aston Villa?
However, despite the defender now being in his 30s, would de Vrij actually want to swap Inter Milan for Aston Villa?
Gerrard’s side are clearly showing ambition and have moved up to 9th in the Premier League table. But they are very unlikely to finish in the top seven, meaning the Villans cannot currently offer any potential signing the lure of European football.
As for Inter Milan, they are the current Serie A champions, and will be just three points off the top of the division once more should they win their game in hand on Napoli and AC Milan.
