Arsenal lining up summer move for Aston Villa midfielder

Arsenal have been linked with a central midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window.

The player in question is Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz. Luiz has been a mainstay in Villa’s midfield under Steven Gerrard and has previously been linked with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Now, according to Football Insider, Arsenal are lining up a new move for Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz after failing to land him in January.

They add that the Gunners’ priority is to sign a top-class striker this summer, but Arteta is also in the market for central midfield reinforcements and a bid is expected to be placed for Luiz in the upcoming window.

Aston Villa’s stance on letting Douglas Luiz leave

The report also details Aston Villa’s view on letting the Brazilian depart the club.

And it is believed that the Midlands-based outfit are willing to let the midfielder go to free up space for Steven Gerrard’s top midfield targets, who include Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.

No potential transfer fee is mentioned in the report.

Arsenal need central midfielders

Whether it be Luiz or somebody else, it is clear Arsenal must sign a central midfielder in the summer.

Mohamed Elneny is out of contract in June, meaning the north Londoners will have just Granit Xhaka, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Thomas Partey and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (currently on loan with AS Roma) as central midfield options.

And as Partey is injury prone and Arsenal are expected to be playing some form of European football next term, fresh legs in midfield seem like a must.
