Thomas Tuchel explains what must happen for Conor Gallagher to be used at Chelsea next season

Thomas Tuchel has provided some insight into Chelsea’s plans for Conor Gallagher next term.

Conor Gallagher would be sent out on loan to Crystal Palace for the 2021/22 season.

At the time, a move for the 22-year-old who had a mixed loan spell with West Brom the season prior made sense.

N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic were all clearly ahead of Gallagher in the Chelsea pecking order, whilst Saul Niguez was also brought in from Atletico Madrid.

Since his move to Palace, the central midfielder has been one of the Premier League’s most impressive talents.

In 27 league ties this term, Gallagher has scored eight and assisted three. Gallagher has also assisted two in four FA Cup games, but cannot be part of the Palace side that faces Chelsea on Sunday as they are, of course, his parent club.

Tuchel on Gallagher

But after an impressive 2021/22 out on loan, what are the plans for Gallagher next term? Will he be given a shot under Thomas Tuchel or, like many of the young stars to emerge at the club, will he be sent back out on loan or perhaps even sold?

Well, Tuchel has provided some insight into the plans for Gallagher next season on Sunday, stating:

"I believe Conor can be a part of our squad [next season] and can play a role with us," Tuchel told reporters this afternoon ahead of the FA Cup semi-final. "But I am not the only one to decide. We need to speak after the season with everybody, speak after the season about what Conor wants, and we need to see what the situation is and what role we have for him that he can fight for.

"There needs to be something to fight for, a role and perspective of where you are, where you can be, what you need to achieve. So we have to be very clear with him, and he needs to be clear with us. Then we will sort it out. His development is extraordinary and outstanding. He is one of the key players at Crystal Palace and made a huge step in his development upfront. He was a pleasure to coach in pre-season – he has so much positive energy, energy in general, and such a work rate to give that he can have a big influence."
