The Donny van de Beek decision that could see Dutchman become key figure at Manchester United

The Donny van de Beek decision that could see Dutchman become key figure at Manchester United

Van de Beek’s Man United struggles

Donny van de Beek signed for Man United during the delayed summer window last year, setting the Red Devils back around 35 million pounds.

Van de Beek had spent his previous years impressing with Ajax, and at 35 million pounds, looked a fairly decent buy for United.

However, despite the midfielder being signed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s watch, the Norwegian refused to hand the 24-year-old any sort of regular game-time throughout 2020/21.

Van de Beek made 19 Premier League appearances, but just three of those saw him complete 90 minutes – two of which came right at the end of the campaign when United had nothing left to play for.

So, with the summer window now open, it has not been all that surprising to see van de Beek’s future at Old Trafford called into question. Arsenal, for one, found themselves linked with the midfielder earlier in the window.

Van de Beek makes decision to improve physique

Van de Beek, though, has since taken a decision that could yet see him become a key figure for Man United next season.

As per The Athletic, after taking a two-week holiday, the Dutchman has since been working with both the club’s medical team and strength and conditioning coaches to improve his physique ahead of his second year in England.

It is added that van de Beek returned to his home village and developed a plan to gain lean muscle, enlisting the help of an elite specialised training centre in Amsterdam, where he followed a personalised nutrition plan and weight-based training sessions.

The midfielder’s transformation is already noticeable in the flesh, and even prompted teammate Harry Maguire to post the following comment on Instagram:

Of course, only time will tell if van de Beek’s decision to improve his physique will pay dividends in Manchester, but it does appear to be a step in the right direction for the Dutchman.
