Steven Gerrard hints at reason for Ollie Watkins missing Brentford vs Aston Villa

Brentford vs Aston Villa

One of several Premier League ties taking place on Sunday afternoon will see Aston Villa face off with Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Villa head into the game on a pretty patchy run of form, having won two and lost three of their last five league ties.

However, they will face a Brentford side who are in even worse form at present, with the Bees having notched just one victory from their last five.

Ahead of today’s game, Steven Gerrard spoke to the press on Friday.

When doing so, the Villa boss confirmed that both Leon Bailey and Marvelous Nakamba had been ruled out of the tie.

However, when Aston Villa released their starting line-up and matchday squad ahead of kick-off at Brentford, there was another big name noticeably absent.

The player in question was striker, Ollie Watkins.

The possibility of Watkins missing out was not brought up by Gerrard in his most recent press conference, so the omission of the hitman was somewhat surprising.

When drawn on Watkins’ absence this afternoon pre-match, the Villa boss refused to provide a precise explanation. However, as reported by the BBC, Gerrard did admit that his side are suffering with Covid-19 issues, hinting that Watkins may have tested positive for the virus.

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has declined to explicitly state the reason for Ollie Watkins’ absence but confirmed Villa are suffering problems with Covid and injuries. Read into that what you will.
