St James' Park pre Newcastle 2 - Leicester 3

Newcastle fans rage against Graeme Souness before Crystal Palace

Newcastle fans vs Graeme Souness

In the pre-match show on Sky Sports on Sunday before Crystal Palace took on Newcastle, the pundits discussed the January transfer window at St James’ Park.

Newcastle only made three loan signings in the window. Goalie Martin Dubravka joined from Sparta Prague. Midfielder Kenedy moved from Chelsea. And Islam Slimani switched from Leicester.

Where were the permanent signings? Are these players really going to keep Newcastle up?

And if Newcastle do go down, will Rafa Benitez walk?

When the Newcastle transfers were discussed by Graeme Souness, the talking-head upset Toon supporters.

‘Don’t blame Mike Ashley’

According to Souness owner Mike Ashley hasn’t let Newcastle fans down.

Souness made the following comments on Sky:

I’ve been at Newcastle, it’s a very hard job for the manager. The players are under enormous pressure and you have to be a big player to cope with that. 56,000 – it’s difficult to play when you’re under pressure. So the players have to stand up and be counted.

What I find difficult to understand is that Rafa is not an inexperienced manager. When he took the job I’m sure he was sat down I’m sure it was explained to him where they were going.

One of the first questions you ask is ‘How much have you got for new players?’ Unless someone is reneging on their word, which I very much doubt, he must have known the situation he was walking into.

Cue the Newcastle backlash

So Mike Ashley has been good to Benitez and Newcastle fans?

Magpies supporters took to social media to slam the Sky Sports pundit.
