Sevilla director confirms that Barcelona & Roma target Steven N’Zonzi ‘wants to leave’

Sevilla director of sport Joaquin Caparros this morning officially confirmed that Steven NZonzi is seeking a departure from the club this summer.

Midfield powerhouse

NZonzi, a deep-lying midfielder equally adept either with the ball at his feet or at breaking up the attacks of opposing sides, has established himself has one of the finest midfielders in La Liga over the last couple of seasons, leading to intense links with the likes of Juventus and Arsenal last summer.

However, in the end, no club was willing to meet the 29-year-old’s release clause, despite NZonzi himself having reportedly been keen on a departure.

Last season since proved to be a peculiar one for the former Blackburn and Stoke man, with a major fallout between he and former Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo in November having seen NZonzi dropped from the club’s first-team for 6 weeks.

Despite heavy reports that he had likely played his final game for the club, though, NZonzi managed to work his way back into contention at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, with the powerful midfielder’s performances over the second-half of the season having been absolutely exemplary.

In fact, so impressive was the 29-year-old, that he managed to earn a place in France’s World Cup squad, ahead of the likes of PSG star Adrien Rabiot and more, since going on to add a World Cup winner’s medal to his trophy cabinet.

On the move

Unsurprisingly, NZonzi’s stellar recent form has seen the Les Bleus’ star inevitably linked with a Sevilla departure once again this summer, with Arsenal having been touted as a potential destination once more.

Outlets in Spain over the last month subsequently claimed that the midfielder’s father-agent had informed Sevilla of his absolute intention to depart the club, with a report from Mundo Deportivo having since suggested that Barcelona have now joined the race for NZonzi’s signature.

‘Wants to leave’

However, a number of significant updates over the last couple of weeks have seen a new contender, in the form of Serie A outfit AS Roma, reportedly take a clear lead in the race for NZonzi’s signature, with multiple outlets in Italy having even gone as far as to suggest that the Giallorossi have already agreed personal terms with the midfielder.

Sevilla have since denied such claims, but, while it remains unclear as to who is actually closest to striking a deal for NZonzi as things stand, one thing that is now public knowledge is the fact the former Blackburn man does intend to depart the Sanchez Pizjuan this summer.

Speaking in an interview with Cadena Ser this morning, Sevilla director of sport Joaquin Caparros had the following to say regarding NZonzi’s stance on his future:

‘It’s true that N’Zonzi wants to leave, but he still has two years left on his contract with us.’

‘He is on the market and if he wants to go, he must bring an important offer. Otherwise, he’ll remain here for another two years and he will respect his contract.’
