Rio Ferdinand sends message to Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho

Rio Ferdinand has been discussing Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho

Sancho joined Manchester United last summer. The winger is reported to have set The Red Devils back £73m.

At the time, Sancho’s signing seemed like a major coup. Man United were crying out for a natural right-winger and, owing to Sancho’s impressive stint in Germany with Borussia Dortmund, it seemed as though he was the man they needed to address the issue.

Sancho scored 16 and assisted 20 in just 38 outings for Dortmund during the 2020/21 season, after netting 20 and assisting 20 in 44 games the campaign prior.

So, considering his price-tag and previously impressive form, expectations were understandably high when the 22-year-old signed for Man United.

However, Sancho went on to provide just five goals and three assists across 37 outings during his debut season with United.

In 2022/23, meanwhile, Sancho has scored three and assisted two in 14, which is a small improvement but still nowhere near his Dortmund level.

“His confidence just isn’t there. The confidence and the swagger when he walked through the doors at Old Trafford isn’t there right now. The ball gets to him and the Sancho I know and have seen… get him on the corner of the box and you’re in dreamland. But then he’s just coming back out and playing back and recycling the ball,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel FIVE.

“This isn’t you man. With Sancho, I just feel that it’s in there and what I will give him credit for is his defensive work. His shape has been good but it’s the other side of the game that’s missing and that’s why we bought him. We didn’t buy him to be a defender, we bought him to destroy teams, I want to see more from him.’’
