Real Madrid are keeping an eye on Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies ahead of a potential summer transfer, with Los Blancos looking to replace the departed Marcelo according to reports.
The Brazilian defender left the Bernabeu after 15 years and nearly 550 appearances, which included 5 Champions League and six La Liga trophies, making him one of the most decorated players in World Football alongside compatriot Dani Alves.
In the time since his relegation from first choice and subsequent departure, Carlo Ancelotti is yet to find a left-back that he can fully trust. Ferland Mendy made 22 La Liga appearances, but duties were shared with David Alaba also deputising there occasionally.
So far this season, both Alaba and Rudiger have rotated with Mendy, who remains first choice for the most part, but it is clear that Ancelotti would like to improve his options in that area.
And, as per Marca, the club are looking at Davies to do just that. The young Canadian defender shot to prominence with Bayern, and has helped Canada reach the World Cup finals for the first time since 1986. Still only 21 years old, he suffered heart and other COVID-19 related issues last season, but remains one of the most dangerous youngsters in Europe due in no small part to his electric turn of pace.
And he is a player that Real Madrid are keen on. “The full-back, whose contract expires in 2025, is being closely watched by the club for a position that has room for improvement” Marca report.
“However, the priority right now is to resolve the different contract renewals that need attending to, with Luka Modric, Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos being prime examples”, they add.
With the likes of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe both also potentially on the move this summer, however, Davies’ future may be one that is not resolved until 2024.
