Real Madrid boss fires Ralph Rangnick a Cristiano Ronaldo warning

Real Madrid boss fires Ralph Rangnick a Cristiano Ronaldo warning

Rangnick due to take over

Ralph Rangnick is due to take over at Old Trafford in the coming days, taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked last Sunday after a 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road.

He will not be in the dugout for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea, but could take charge of his first game when Arsenal travel to Old Trafford to take on the Red Devils on Thursday night.

Outlined as the “godfather of Gegenpressing“, Rangnick’s ideas have influenced current Premier League pressing managers Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp, suggesting that the cornerstones of his philosophy will remain the same: lots of running, counter-pressing and quick transitional play.

But will it work?

Ancelotti fires Cristiano Ronaldo warning

Now, Real Madrid boss has handed Ralph Rangnick a warning surrounding one of his star players, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking exclusively to Correire Della Sport, Ancelotti outlined what can and can’t be done with the Portuguese star, and for Rangnick’s high pressing system, it could prove an issue.

The Los Blancos coach said:

If I have Modric and Kroos I can’t expect to do high pressing. I’d be an idiot if with a striker like Vinicius, who has a motor under his feet, I didn’t rely on the counterattack.

I’ll give you one last example: if I have Ronaldo in front of me I study how to get the ball to him often, I don’t ask him to exhaust himself by tracking back. It’s the same with Ibra.

There are two types of players: those who make a difference and those who have to run. Conte must have said that, and if he didn’t it’s fine too. I’ve never cultivated an ideology like Guardiolismo, Sarrismo. My creed is team identity.

Will Rangnick be able to create a system that allows Ronaldo to remain a player that makes a difference, rather than one that has to run?
