RB Leipzig star undergoes early Chelsea medical ahead of 2023 switch

The transfer team at Stamford Bridge are already hard at work in a bid to secure reinforcements for next season

Word stemming from the German media on Thursday points towards one of Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig’s star performers preparing for a move to the Premier League, with Chelsea.

The player in question? Christopher Nkunku.

Versatile attacker Nkunku, of course, was hotly tipped for a departure from the Red Bull Arena throughout this past summer.

This came after the 24-year-old, now a fully established French international, enjoyed something of a breakout campaign, to the tune of 35 goals and 20 assists across all competitions.

In the end, though, evidently, none of the interested parties managed to do enough to convince the powers that be at Leipzig of the merits of a sale.

Nkunku, in turn, was forced to stay put for the season ahead.

This comes with Nkunku understood to be Premier League-bound, primed to link up with Graham Potter’s Chelsea.

As per a report from Bild, via Fussball.News, the gifted attacker carried out a round of secret medical examinations with the Blues prior to the close of the summer transfer window back in August.

Chelsea club doctors, including an orthopedist and cardiologist, are both understood to have been present in Frankfurt.

All of this came not with a view to a transfer this year, but in 2023.

Nkunku’s release clause is primed to drop to just €60 million next summer, at which point the powers that be at Stamford Bridge are ready to stump up the cash to make Leipzig’s star man the latest addition to a frontline already boasting the talents of Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz and more.
