Questions reemerge over Rudiger’s future following omission from Chelsea squad to face Liverpool/RLC also absent

Speculation surrounding the future of Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger looks set to ramp up imminently once more, after the German was surprisingly left out of the club’s latest matchday squad.

Blues host Reds

Frank Lampard’s men are set to get their Premier League campaign back underway on Sunday, in a high-profile meeting with Liverpool.

The matchup has drawn widespread attention over the course of the last week, with Frank Lampard’s new-look squad set for their first real challenge of the new season (albeit with a number of key players sidelined).

The Londoners got their term off to the perfect start last weekend, seeing off a plucky Brighton side to eventually emerge with a 3-1 win.

Their opponents this evening, meanwhile, also bagged 3 points in their first outing of the campaign, courtesy of a thrilling 4-3 downing of Leeds United.

As such, an action-packed, entertaining affair is widely predicted at Stamford Bridge in less than an hour’s time.

Rudiger misses out

As is customary, an hour prior to kick-off this evening, the starting lineups of both sides were made official across social media.

Frank Lampard’s hosts set up as follows, with Mateo Kovacic returning to starting duties, Marcos Alonso maintaining his place at left-back and all of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell out through injury:

The main talking point surrounding Chelsea’s squad, though, cenrtres on another pair of omissions.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, on the back of a difficult day’s work in the Blues’ season opener last weekend, has not even been afforded a spot on Lampard’s bench to face Liverpool.

Perhaps even more noteworthy, though, is the complete absence of Antonio Rudiger.

Whilst Loftus-Cheek is of course still working his way back towards full fitness following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, German stopper Rudiger is thought to be match fit.

His omission this evening, when taking into account the fact that summer arrival Thiago Silva has not yet even been integrated into Chelsea’s backline, would therefore appear to suggest that Rudiger has fallen to 4th in the central-defensive pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

In turn, question marks have swiftly begun to pop back up surrounding the former Roma man’s future in the English capital, amid hints that, if the right kind of offer arrives, Lampard and co. could well be tempted into a sale.
