Pep Guardiola explains why Erling Haaland struggled vs Real Madrid

Erling Haaland did not have his best game for Manchester City on Tuesday.

Manchester City and Real Madrid went head-to-head in the first of two semi-final Champions League ties on Tuesday.

Madrid took the lead in the match thanks to Vinicius Jr. but Kevin De Bruyne equalised in the second 45, meaning the Sky Blues take a draw back to the Etihad for next week’s leg.

A decent result overall for Manchester City but Erling Haaland, City’s record breaking robot, did not have his best showing vs Real.

Haaland had two tame efforts saved early in the match, but largely struggled as Antonio Rudiger in particular stuck tight to him. The striker had fewer touches than anyone else on the pitch, with half as many as Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

And now, Pep Guardiola has spoken out on why the Norwegian had a tough outing in Spain:

“The pockets and distances between the central defenders and full-backs was occupied for attacking midfielders,” Guardiola explained.
