Nottingham Forest ‘on verge’ of landing Newcastle midfielder

Nottingham Forest are closing on the January addition of a long-time member of the midfield ranks at Premier League rivals Newcastle United, according to reports.

The Magpies star close to taking his talents to the City Ground ahead of the 2nd half of the campaign? Jonjo Shelvey.

Experienced midfielder Shelvey has of course endured an altogether difficult season to date.

Owing to a pair of muscular injuries, the former Liverpool man has been restricted to a paltry five appearances across all competitions, just three of which have come by way of the Premier League.

With Eddie Howe’s troops continuing to thrive in his absence, it should therefore perhaps come as little surprise to hear that the powers that be on Tyneside are ready to sanction Shelvey’s departure this month.

The 30-year-old’s current terms are set to expire in the summer, meaning a sale over the days ahead likely represents Newcastle’s final opportunity to recoup any sort of fee for his services.

And now, as alluded to above, such a deal appears to be on the verge of coming to fruition.

As per a report from the reliable Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph, Shelvey is close to putting pen to paper on terms with Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest.

A cut-price agreement between the two clubs is understood to be very much in the offing, with Shelvey himself, ahead of an imminent return to fitness, keen to make the move to the City Ground.
