Nathaniel Clyne released by Liverpool/Man United offer ‘support package’ to 9 departing players

Nathaniel Clyne

Premier League champions-in-waiting Liverpool have confirmed that the club have decided not to extend the contract of Nathaniel Clyne, meaning the stopper will depart as a free agent at the end of the month.

Reds exit

English right-back Clyne has been on the books at Anfield since 2015.

Following a stellar stint with Southampton, Liverpool snapped the now-29-year-old up for a fee thought to be in the region of £12 million.

After playing a key role in the first-team setup of the Merseyside giants during his first couple of seasons with the club, however, a combination of injury problems and competition for places subsequently saw Clyne’s game-time fall off a cliff.

In fact, over the course of the last 3 campaigns (barring a short loan stint with Bournemouth), the one-time English international has managed a paltry 3 Premier League appearances under Jurgen Klopp.

As such, news arriving this evening that Liverpool have decided against extending Clyne’s contract has come as little surprise.

In an announcement across the club’s website and social media platforms, the Reds confirmed that their injury-ravaged stopper is set to move on upon the expiration of his contract on the 30th of June:

Set to follow Clyne out the Anfield exit door, meanwhile, are a host of young talents, in the form of Dan Atherton, Isaac Christie-Davies, Shamal George, Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Jack Walls, Alex Turner and Abel Rodrigues.

‘Next stage of their careers’

Liverpool, though, are not the only high-profile Premier League club to have announced the imminent departures of a host of youngsters today.

Manchester United have confirmed that they will not be offering fresh terms to any of the following 9 academy players:

Demetri Mitchell, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Ethan Hamilton, Dion McGhee, Largie Ramazani, George Tanner, Aidan Barlow, Kieran O’Hara and Alex Fojticek.

In a superb gesture on the part of the Red Devils, though, it has also been revealed that:

‘All outgoing players have been offered a package of support which includes the option to return to the Aon Training Complex for pre-season, in order to maintain fitness ahead of the next stage of their careers.’

United will also be helping their departing starlets to find new clubs.
