The comments of Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy regarding Manchester City loanee Bersant Celina have been going viral online today.
McCarthy’s Blues travelled to the Pirelli Stadium to take on Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon, having lost 4 of their last 5 league outings.
A dismal first-half showing from the visitors was compounded by a 57th-minute opener from Burton’s Ben Turner, the first goal scored by Albion in more than 9 hours.
Supporters of Ipswich reacted angrily to their side going behind, with calls for Mick McCarthy’s resignation having piled pressure on the Irishman to introduce fan-favourite Bersant Celina, a gifted Kosovar on loan from Premier League leaders Manchester City.
The Citizens loanee was eventually brought on in the 84th minute, netting a late winner from a free-kick after Martyn Waghorn had levelled things up for the away side in the 66th minute.
In his post-match interview, former Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy was questioned on whether he had decided to introduce Celina due to the calls from his side’s fans.
However, never one to mince words, the 58-year-old was typically blunt in his response:
‘I don’t give a s***e about that, by the way. He didn’t go on because of that, let me just clear that up.’
‘In fact, there’s more chance of him not going on when they start telling me what to do. And yes, I am a belligerent f**k. Let’s just clear that up.’
‘He has every chance of going on when the game gets stretched. I don’t think it was the game for him when we’re having to head balls out and fight and scrap, but with 10 minutes to play it is, strangely enough.’
‘It’s a wonderful finish. He’s celebrated with the fans, thrown his shirt in with them, they all love him and he’s maybe given the bird to me – but I don’t mind that because that’s what he’s paid for.’
‘He’s the hero, fabulous, but I tell you what there were some more heroes there today who kept a clean sheet up until half-time. They enabled him to do that. Good luck to him.’
Deal with it
The Ipswich boss was then questioned on negative chants from his side’s supporters ‘creeping back in’, with the travelling contingent of Blues fans having sang ‘Mick McCarthy, your football is s**t’ and ‘Mick McCarthy, get out of our club’ during Saturday’s clash.
‘They crept back in did they? You’re kidding me. I think they more than crept back in.’
‘Listen, unless somebody decides otherwise, you’ve got me, boring old big nose f***ing fart with s***e football until May. Unless somebody decides different.’
‘Brighter than I thought’
Finally, McCarthy was quizzed on a recent cryptic social media message from Bersant Celina, who took to Twitter to post:
‘Two months until the new year.’
And the oft-controversial coach once again did not disappoint with his response:
‘It’s factually correct, isn’t it? He’s a f***ing brighter lad than I thought!’
