Liverpool vs Chelsea: Premier League preview

Liverpool host Chelsea at Anfield in the Premier League this Saturday.

Chelsea begin the weekend 3rd in the table, nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City. Three points and two places behind the Blues, a win for Liverpool would see them move level with their opponents.

Both sides were in midweek Champions League action but had contrasting fortunes. Liverpool squandered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 late on in Sevilla.

A brace from Roberto Firmino and one from Sadio Mane saw Jurgen Klopp’s side go into the break at the Sanchez Pizjuan with a seemingly comfortable lead before their second-half collapse.

Liverpool remain top of their Champions League group, despite the result, although qualification to the knockouts is not yet confirmed.

The result puts an end to Liverpool’s four-match winning streak. Last weekend the Reds won 3-0 against Southampton with goals from Mohamed Salah (2) and Philippe Coutinho.

Chelsea booked their place in the Round of 16 with a 4-0 win at Qarabag on Wednesday. Converted penalties from Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas, as well as a brace from Willian, sealed the victory.

The win follows on from last weekend’s 4-0 win at West Brom, where Hazard scored a brace.

With nine of Liverpool’s ten outfield players starting the last two matches, the Reds are likely to be more fatigued than their opponents.

It is one of the reasons Jurgen Klopp kept his men in Spain to train the morning after their Champions League draw.

Klopp will be hoping to have Joel Matip back from a thigh injury.

Adam Lallana is back in training and is “really knocking on the door”, although the England midfielder is unlikely to be risked.

Salah, Daniel Sturridge and Dom Solanke are all in contention to face their former club.

Alvaro Morata was partially rested in midweek and should return to the starting line-up on Saturday.

At the back, Andreas Christensen was given the night off in Azerbaijan, while Gary Cahill was only partially used.

Tiemoue Bakayoko was also rest v Qarabag, while N’Golo Kante was subbed out the game to get a breather.

Former Liverpool loanee Victor Moses could return from a hamstring problem picked up in mid October.

Kenedy and Michy Bathsuayi will be assessed for muscular and knee injuries respectively, but are both expected to miss out.

Charly Musonda remains sidelined with a knee injury.
