It has been a an out-of-character wait to lift a trophy for Manchester United, who are without silverware since winning the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017 and generally been starved of the success experienced under Sir Alex Ferguson in recent years.

This represents their best chance of ending that six-year wait, with the Red Devils looking revitalised and full of confidence under the impressive Erik ten Hag and still competing on four fronts in a season that is only gathering momentum.

They came back from behind to see off Barcelona in the Europa League on Thursday in a game that while it didn’t carry huge significance in terms of the competition itself, signalled their ability to compete at the top table of European football once more.

For Newcastle, their build-up to a first major final since 1999 has been dominated by two key suspnesions.

Bruno Guimaraes was the first, having been sent off in the semi-final win over Southampton, but it was Nick Pope’s dismissal against Liverpool which is likely to cause the most upset to the side, with Loris Karius set to make his club debut in the biggest of spotlights.

Those two absentees – to two of their most important players – put Newcastle firmly as second favourites and their recent form has not been what it was before Christmas, but their league position shows they are not a side to be underestimated.
