Manchester United loanee Marcel Sabitzer will miss the final three games of the season through a knee injury, meaning that he may well have played his last game for the Red Devils.
The midfielder arrived from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day in January following the news that Christian Eriksen was set to be sidelined until May with an ankle injury sustained in a routine FA Cup win over Reading.
He has appeared 18 times since then, and has put in some performances but missed the win over Wolves with a knee complaint, which has since developed into something more serious.
“Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has suffered a meniscal injury which will, unfortunately, rule him out for the remainder of the season”, an official statement read.
Erik Ten Hag will be able to sign him for just 20m euros (£17.9m) this summer should they wish to make the Austrian a permanent addition at Old Trafford, it had been revealed earlier in the season.
Midfield is an area that the Red Devils are looking to strengthen this summer, and to that end the 29-year-old could be a shrewd acquisition, with the arrival of Ryan Gravenberch and the impending arrival of former teammate Konrad Laimer at the Allianz Arena likely making Sabitzer surplus to requirements for Thomas Tuchel.
‘United made it clear that it was a project until the summer, then we’ll see’, he told German outlet Bild.
‘But I can say that I found my place here. Now I know the Premier League and can say there’s nothing better, more intense and tougher. Every game is a fight. It’s the best league in the world. When you play once here you know it’s incomparable
‘Of course my thoughts are on United, especially with the trust I get from Erik ten Hag – it’s very positive. But I’m not the only one who decides.’
However, they are also looking for younger players, and are rivalling Arsenal for midfielder Declan Rice, which may make Sabitzer’s services surplus to requirements.
