Manchester City’s Phil Foden outlines Lionel Messi ambition

England and Manchester City winger Phil Foden has been discussing his ambitions.

Foden has always been a top-class talent but 2022/23 has seen him truly emerge as one of the brightest names in English football.

He has already scored eight goals and provided three assists in the Premier League this season and is forming a great partnership with Erling Haaland in City’s attack.

Now, whilst many may label Foden as World Class, he has stated that he does not see himself as that, though he does want to one day reach the level of players like Lionel Messi:

“I definitely don’t see myself as world class,” he said. “I’ve got to score in big games and finals to be world class. I’m capable of doing that, so it’s something I strive for. Players such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo are way above me at the moment.

“But I could be there one day. It’s all about taking small steps in the right direction. I just want to take my Man City form into the England national team. I am back playing more wide this year, previous years I was playing as a false nine as well.

“It definitely helps having someone as a target like Erling Haaland , it gives us a little bit more space. I have added more goals, getting in the right areas, it is good that I am improving that side of my game as I see myself as a goalscorer.”
