Manchester City vs Liverpool FC: Score prediction & betting tips

Manchester City welcome the newly crowned champions, Liverpool, to the Etihad this Thursday evening.

Last season we saw one of the closest and most exciting title races in Premier League history, finishing with Manchester City becoming Champions for the 6th time. They pipped Liverpool to the post by just 1 point in the end. Both teams recorded points totals in the top 3 in the history of the English top flight.

There was rightly much excitement and anticipation for them to resume their battle for the 2019/20 campaign. However, Liverpool have ended up winning the title at a canter, wrapping up the league quicker than any side in history, with 7 games to spare.

This is largely down to the frightening pace they have set as league leaders from the outset. They picked up 79 of a possible 81 points from their opening 27 games of the campaign.

As a result, this will see Manchester City give Liverpool the guard of honour before Thursday’s game. Will this act as a passing of the torch moment, or as motivation to come back stronger and reclaim the title next year for City?

Manchester City vs Liverpool FC: What are the betting odds?

Manchester City have won each of the last two league meetings between the sides at the Etihad. They also come into the game having collected 19 points from a possible 21 from their last 7 league games. Therefore, it is no surprise to see them start the match as favourites for the win, at evens.

While the two teams are often easily matched, draws between them are few and far between. Only 2 of the last 11 matches have ended in stalemate. The odds of this clash ending in them sharing the points are 11/4.

While Liverpool historically have a good record against City, they have won only 1 of their last 10 league visits here. That win was their 1-4 demolition of Pellegrini’s City early in the Klopp era. Their odds of 23/10 reflect the expectation that the newly crowned Champions pick up all 3 points on Thursday

Manchester City vs Liverpool FC: Most likely goalscorers?

Raheem Sterling has often struggled in matches against his former club. In his 11 official matches against Liverpool, he is yet to find the scoresheet. Sterling did score in the Community Shield against the Reds in pre-season though; a match deemed a non-competitive match by the FA. He comes into the match in good form, having bent one into the top corner against Newcastle at the weekend. The England international is 13/10 to score against the Reds at the weekend. Or 13/5 to do so as the game’s first scorer.

Kevin de Bruyne has been City’s form player since the Premier League restart. He has scored in each of his last 4 starts for City, including the winning goal at the weekend. However, de Bruyne has never scored against his boyhood-club, Liverpool, in 8 appearances. The Belgian is 10/1 to score the game’s opener on Thursday night. Or 11/4 to bag a goal at any time during the game.

Mohamed Salah has a fantastic record against Manchester City, with 4 goals and 2 assists in 7 Liverpool appearances. This includes the game’s winning goal when they met earlier this season, as he planted a header beyond Ederson to end a fantastic Liverpool counter-attack. Salah is the favourite of those in red to get on the scoresheet at 13/10. You can back the Egyptian King at 5/1 to grab the game’s opening goal.

Manchester City vs Liverpool FC: Match preview

The most recent eras in English football are often defined by it’s managerial rivalries. They usually involve two clubs with no historic rivalry with each other.

Kevin Keegan v Alex Ferguson in the late 90’s – defined by Keegan’s “I’ll love it” moment. Arsene Wenger v Ferguson around the turn of the millennium including the memorable ‘pizza-gate’ incident.

Rafael Benitez v Jose Mourinho in the mid-noughties. The pair seemed to be drawn against each other in the Champions League almost every season. None of which were more memorable than their first and Luis Garcia’s ‘ghost-goal’.

When Liverpool and Manchester City hired the top two coaches from the Bundesliga, another such rivalry was expected. And, while there has been no real controversy between the two managers, the football on display has been amongst the best witnessed on these shores.

Manchester City’s 5-0 annihilation of Liverpool here in September 2017 immediately springs to mind. That day, after Sadio Mané saw red for a high challenge on Ederson, Pep Guardiola’s men ran rampant over the 10 remaining Reds.

Liverpool exacted their revenge later that same season, eliminating Manchester City from the Champions League. Liverpool’s 3-0 win in the first leg being one of Guardiola’s worst defeats during his time in English football.

While the matches between the clubs have been fairly even since, Liverpool showed their superiority earlier this campaign with a 3-1 win. The general consensus being that Liverpool could have run up the score even more, but opted to take their foot off the gas after 50 minutes when 3-0 ahead.

Repeating that feat at the Etihad is another thing entirely though. While City are missing a lot of experience in Aguero and Fernandinho, this could even prove an advantage with a younger, fitter XI matching the highly industrious approach of Klopp’s Reds.

Manchester City team news vs Liverpool FC

Sergio Aguero will miss this match, and possibly the rest of the season, with a knee injury. The exact prognosis is still unknown with Aguero travelling to Barcelona to see Dr Ramon Cugat for further examination.

Following his red-card at Chelsea last Thursday, Fernandinho will be unavailable for this match. He should be back for City’s trip to Southampton at the weekend.

Eric Garcia suffered a nasty collision with Ederson during City’s first game back against Arsenal. Due to the Premier League rules regarding concussions, he has been unavailable since to the Citizens. He is available for selection now but is not expected to feature on Thursday.

John Stones has missed every game since the restart so far with an ankle injury. He was an unused substitute for their FA Cup tie in Newcastle at the weekend. However, it is unlikely Stones will be thrown into such a big match here. Therefore, Otamendi is expected to replace Fernandinho in defence.

Phil Foden missed the Chelsea defeat due to a dead leg. However, he made a return to action against Newcastle at the weekend, creating City’s second goal off of the bench. He is expected to take a place on the bench once more here.

Pep Guardiola often looks to pull a tactical surprise in matches against Liverpool. It is possible Bernardo Silva starting against Chelsea in a false-9 role was in anticipation of this match against Liverpool. Will he look to this once more to achieve numerical advantage in midfield against Liverpool’s trio?

Liverpool FC team news vs Manchester City

Nathaniel Clyne left the club earlier this week with the expiry of his contract. He had not featured for Liverpool this season due to an ACL injury picked up in pre-season.

Xherdan Shaqiri was pictured back in training this week. Klopp confirmed that he had trained but not with the rest of the team. However, he is in a good way and will not be out for long.

James Milner suffered a minor hamstring pull against Everton. While he will miss the game against his former club, he is expected to return before the end of the season.

Joel Matip injured his ankle in the Merseyside Derby. While the extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed, he is expected to play no part on Thursday.

With eight days rest since the Palace match for Liverpool, they are expected to name an unchanged starting XI.
