Manchester City keen on signing Chelsea star this summer with Guardiola a ‘big admirer’

The Blues could be set to repeat their Jorginho sale

Manchester City are reportedly keen on signing Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic this summer as they look to bolster their midfield ranks.

The Cityzens have question marks around their current options, with Ilkay Gundogan out of contract this summer and persistent rumours linking Bernardo Silva with a move away, with Barcelona reportedly keen on the Portuguese star.

Meanwhile, Kalvin Phillips has failed to catch the eye since his £45m move from Leeds United last summer.

And, as per the Telegraph, ‘Pep Guardiola is a big admirer of Kovačić and is expected to make changes to his midfield in the summer’.

The Croatian midfielder is out of contract in 2024, and Chelsea are keen to improve their midfield ranks in the coming transfer windows, with Enzo Fernandez having already arrived from Benfica in January and more expected to arrive in the summer.

Additionally, Andrey Santos, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei are young stars looking to break into the Blues’ ranks.

And the report adds that ‘Kovačić could provide a relatively cheap top-class option if he does not sign a new Chelsea contract’, with the midfielder likely to be sold this summer rather than let go for free in 18 months should that be the case.

Chelsea have already sold experienced midfielder Jorginho this year, with the Italian joining Premier League leaders Arsenal and already helping them while his former side struggle.

But there will be plenty of decisions to be made at Stamford Bridge this summer, with a senior squad of 31 already on Graham Potter’s hands, and the likes of Romelu Lukaku set to return from loan.

It means that there could be bargains to be had, and Manchester City will be on the hunt having previously expressed interest in Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella.
