Major Liverpool blow as Virgil van Dijk set for spell on sidelines

Liverpool have been dealt some bad news on the injury front on Wednesday.

Liverpool faced off with Brentford in a Premier League clash on Monday evening.

Liverpool were looking to regain some ground on the top-four ahead of the game, but things did not work out too well.

The Reds fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brentford and are likely to drift further away from the top-four over the coming days.

Liverpool are seven points off 4th at present, with both Manchester City and Tottenham still set to play out league fixtures this week.

As well as falling further behind the top-four, Liverpool have also been dealt a major blow on the injury front.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, the hamstring injury Virgil van Dijk sustained vs the Bees is worse than first feared and the Dutchman is facing a spell on the sidelines:

This means Jurgen Klopp will have to call upon Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez to fill the void at centre-back in Van Dijk’s absence.

Liverpool are next in action on Saturday evening when they face Wolves in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
