Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold labelled ‘Championship quality’

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has come in for heavy criticism recently.

The defender is having an awful start to the 2022/23 season, with his positioning and overall lack of effort in the defensive third already costing Liverpool a number of goals this season, which you can read more about here.

Despite his poor form, Alexander-Arnold has been called up to the England squad for their current friendlies.

He did not feature in England’s 1-0 loss to Italy and is not expected to play any part in the Germany game on Monday either.

This is because Trent is a very weak defensively and playing him alongside the likes of Harry Maguire, John Stones and Eric Dier would likely end in disaster for England.

And now, former Chelsea star Frank Leboeuf has hit out at Alexander-Arnold for his poor defensive work, labelling him Championship quality:

“Look at Trent Alexander-Arnold. I love the guy, his offensive qualities. But defensively, he’s Championship level,” he said in an interview with Journal du Dimanche.

“Only Klopp’s system works for him. When it doesn’t work as well as it has this season, all you see is his defensive shortcomings. I want to take him with me to work on the basics. I would say to him: ‘Turn your head and look behind you, it will be better already’. It was Roberto Carlos who deformed generations of defenders.”
