Liverpool linked with Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly as Reds eye Lovren replacement

Liverpool eyeing defensive reinforcements

Monday saw Russian outfit Zenit St. Petersburg confirm the signing of Dejan Lovren from Liverpool.

The Croatian hadn’t exactly been a key man in Liverpool’s title-winning season, but he had still proven a useful back-up.

So, with Lovren having departed, Liverpool’s fans have likely been wondering if their side are set to sign some form of replacement.

And if recent comments from Duncan Castles on the Transfer Window Podcast are to be believed, then those in a position of power at Anfield are certainly on the lookout.

One option Liverpool are said to be exploring is signing a left-footed central-defender who can also play at left-back, to provide cover for Andy Robertson:

We reported a few weeks ago in the podcast that Liverpool were in the market for a centre-back… a couple of strategic options, one is to sign a left-footed centre-back who can also play at left-back and provide cover for Andy Robertson because they’re not convinced that they have a young player coming through the ranks who can provide proper cover should Robertson get injured or need rest and in the coming season or not.

Kelly to Liverpool?

One player who certainly fits that bill, and is now being linked with Liverpool, is Lloyd Kelly.

Kelly joined Bournemouth last summer from Bristol City, for a fee of around £13m.

Some horrible luck on the injury front saw the defender miss much of the season, but in recent weeks, Kelly had established himself as a regular in the Cherries’ backline.

The 21-year-old, who is indeed left-footed, is actually a left-back by trade, but he is more than capable of playing at centre-half, making him a solid option for Liverpool.

And according to the Mirror, citing The Express, Kelly is one of the options whom Liverpool are considering as a replacement for Lovren.

No potential fee for Kelly, who is tied down at the Vitality until 2024, is mentioned.

But given the fact that Bournemouth originally paid just £13m, and with their income set to drop by around 50% following the club’s relegation, one would imagine that Kelly won’t command much more of a fee than that for which he was signed last summer.
