Lionel Messi joins Angel Di Maria in Ligue 1 history books after latest assist masterclass vs Nantes

The veteran attacker proved key for PSG once more this evening

Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi has, on Saturday night, continued to etch his name indellibly into the history books of European football.

Argentine icon Messi and co. were back in action a short time ago.

In their latest Ligue 1 outing, PSG made the trip to Nantes, hopeful of making it five wins from six to open the campaign.

And, when all was said and done, secure another comfortable three points is precisely what the French champions went on to do.

A dominant 90 minutes, which saw former Manchester United defender Fabio da Silva sent for an early bath during the first-half, ultimately culminated in a 3-0 triumph for Christophe Galtier’s visitors.

Kylian Mbappe proved the star of the show, notching a brace to take his tally for the Ligue 1 season to seven goals.

But, as alluded to above, amid a comfortable night’s work for PSG, it was Lionel Messi who secured for himself yet another head-turning benchmark.

This came owing to the latest pair of assists racked up by the 7-time Ballon d’Or winner.

After teeing up both of Mbappe’s goals versus Nantes, Messi took his tally to 20 Ligue 1 assists in just 32 appearances in the competition.

This is the 2nd fastest that any player has reached such a mark since assist data was first recorded in France’s top-flight, with the 35-year-old having required one game more than compatriot and record-holder Angel Di Maria (31):
