Why Leo Messi is on the bench for Barcelona at Sevilla

Leo Messi on the bench for Barcelona at Sevilla!

Barcelona take on Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday night and Leo Messi is not in Ernesto Valverde’s starting line-up.

The diminutive Argentine has been troubled of late by a hamstring injury and missed both of his country’s games during the international break.

Messi watched on from the stands as Argentina beat Italy 2-0 before they fell to a humiliating 6-1 loss to Spain last Tuesday.

On Saturday, despite training a couple of times this week with Barcelona, Messi starts the Sevilla match on the bench.

Is Leo Messi ok?

Whilst Leo Messi returned to training on Thursday, it seems the Barcelona superstar has not shaken off the hamstring injury that dogged him during the international break.

Messi was under observation ahead of kick off.

The word from the Catalan press on Saturday is that Ernesto Valverde was taking no risks with Messi’s injury.

Barcelona hold a commanding lead in La Liga and the Catalans have some big matches coming up.

Not least, their Champions League first leg clash with Roma this coming Wednesday at the Camp Nou.

Valverde is a calm and precise coach who simply did not want to jeopardise any injury problems for his squad.

It will be fascinating to see whether Messi comes in at Sevilla, since even if Barcelona lose (unlikely) the La Liga title would still be very much on.
