Leicester City vs Manchester United: Score prediction & betting tips

Leicester welcome Man United to the King Power Stadium on Sunday for the final league match of the 2019/20 campaign.

The match is being billed as a UEFA Champions League playoff, given that the winner is guaranteed to qualify for next season’s competition.

United come into the match as the form side. They are unbeaten in their last thirteen Premier League matches. The Red Devils collected twenty-nine points from a possible thirty-nine in that time; two more points than any other side.

In contrast, Leicester have picked up just fourteen points from the same run of games. Only six sides have collected fewer points since the beginning of February than Brendan Rodgers’ side.

101 Great Goals predicts: Leicester City 1 – 1 Manchester United

Champions League Qualification: Possible Scenarios

Whoever wins their final games of the season from Chelsea, United and Leicester are guaranteed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.

A point would also be enough for both United and Chelsea to qualify.

In the event of a draw against United, Leicester would need Chelsea to lose against Wolverhampton Wanderers to guarantee a spot in the Champions league.

Defeat for Leicester would see them finish in fifth spot in the table.

Chelsea would need Leicester to also lose to still qualify for the Champions league. In the event both Chelsea and United lose their games, United would finish in the top four due to their vastly superior goal difference.

Leicester City vs Manchester United: What are the betting odds?

Leicester have an awful record in the Premier League era against United, with just two wins from twenty-seven matches. Being at home seems to do little to improve the situation, having won only once in thirteen matches here. They start the day as 23/10 outsiders.

Two of the last four matches here between these sides have ended in stalemate. Odds of 5/2 are available if you see them cancelling each other out once more.

Man United have won seven of the last eight matches in this head-to-head. However, the last four have all been separated by a single goal, suggesting they were rather close affairs. They rightly start the day as strong favourites at 11/10.

Leicester City vs Manchester United: Most likely goalscorers?

In the race for the Golden Boot, Jamie Vardy is two goals clear of the chasing pack. He would be the first English player to win it since Harry Kane claimed back to back awards in 2016 and 2017. Vardy has been in scintillating form since the restart, with four goals in his last five appearances.

United pair Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford both sit in the top ten scorers list with seventeen goals each. It represents the best season for each of them by some distance, given neither had scored more than eleven goals in a campaign. It has also alleviated concerns many fans had coming into the season about the lack of a guaranteed goal-scorer at the club.

If either Martial or Rashford find the net on Sunday, they will have scored more league goals in a season than any United player since Robin van Persie won the golden boot award with twenty-six in 2012/13.

Nemanja Matic

Leicester City vs Manchester United: Match preview

Only a Marcus Rashford penalty separated these sides when they met earlier this season. Truth be told, it was quite a dull game with neither side creating anything of note.

The concern for United will be that penalties have often solved problems for them this season. They have received more penalties than any other side, with thirteen. Eight of those penalties have come when the games have been tied, such as the Leicester match above.

If you ignore penalties both for and against, their goal difference from a tied state this season is zero. As in, they have gone ahead in games just as often as going behind. This also mirrors the expected goals (xG) of their games when in a tied state.

However, once United do get ahead in games, they have done a good job in turning it on. We saw this side of them in their recent comfortable wins against Sheffield United, Brighton, Bournemouth and Villa.

This is an even more extreme pattern with Leicester. The Foxes average 1.24 goals per 90 when tied and 1.29 when behind. However, their 3.40 goals per 90 when ahead in games is more than any other side, including both Liverpool and Man City.

This is likely underpinned by the excellent counter attacking threat both sides possess through forwards like Vardy, Martial and Rashford. While at the back, both sides are perhaps better suited to sitting in a block and limiting space in behind to protect the lack of pace of Wes Morgan and Harry Maguire.

It is something of a cliché to say whoever scores first will likely win. On Sunday though, this almost certainly looks the case.

Leicester City team news vs Manchester United

Leicester are missing four key members of their starting XI, as well as numerous key squad players coming into their season finale.

Caglar Söyüncü is suspended following his red card against Bournemouth. Wes Morgan will continue in his absence at centre-half.

Ricardo Pereira is still in rehab for his cruciate ligament injury. His replacement at right wing-back has been Marc Albrighton. However, Albrighton is a doubt for the match due to a groin problem.

This means James Justin could be stepping in at right wing-back with Ryan Bennett coming in at centre-back to replace Justin.

They have problems on the opposite flank too, with Ben Chilwell currently out with a heel injury. Manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed this week that Chilwell won’t feature again this season.

His understudy, Christian Fuchs, is also out for the rest of the season due to a pelvic injury. This could see 19-year old Luke Thomas come in for his third start of the campaign.

James Maddison is also ruled out for the Foxes. Although Rodgers is hopeful he’ll be ready for pre-season. Ayoze Pérez will continue to deputise for the young playmaker.

Daniel Amartey has yet to feature for Leicester under Brendan Rodgers. He is currently sidelined after an ankle operation and no return date is being mentioned at present.

Manchester United team news vs Leicester City

For Manchester United, most of their injuries are affecting their squad depth in defence at present.

Eric Bailly was withdrawn against Chelsea following a head injury. He was removed wearing a neckbrace and stayed overnight in London for a concussion check-up. He won’t be available for this match due to concussion protocols.

Axel Tuanzebe has been ruled out by Solskjær until September with an unspecified injury.

Phil Jones has been ruled out of the Premier League run-in. However, he could be back in time for the Europa League in August.

Luke Shaw twisted his ankle in the 2-2 draw with Southampton. He is rated as 50/50 to be available on Sunday. Brandon Williams will continue in his absence if Shaw fails to recover in time.

Harry Maguire suffered a head laceration after his clash with Eric Bailly. However, he suffered no concussion and is clear to play for United.
